Why did you join cross country?
I joined cross country in 7th and 8th grade because my mom made me. Later, though, in 9th and 10th grade I’ve grown to love the sport and my teammates.
How long have you been in cross country?
7th, 9th, and 10th grades.
What are your hopes for this year? How have you improved since you started?
To get past regionals and make it to the state meet in Austin, TX.
Our whole team has improved by decreasing the race time every meet we run do to the training we do every morning.
What have you learned from cross country (in the sport and life skills)?
Sport: I’ve learned to pace myself, and that it’s all about mind over matter.
Life: I’ve learned to push through obstacles and never give up.
Think about the people you’ve met through cross country: coaches, students, fans. Who has influenced you the most? Why?
Probably Mason Youngblood and Dylan Stephens. As a freshman, I was nervous about my first year in high school, but these two seniors not only made XC fun but every part of high school. They introduced me to many upperclassmen, and I became more sociable than I thought I would have.
Who’s your biggest supporter(s)?
Cross Country’s supporters are Coach Hatton, out parents, and ourselves who always work together and picking each other up.
What’s the highest prize you’ve won (team, individual)?
This year we have won multiple races, and have successfully advanced to the Regional meet.
What’s it like getting up so early in the morning and then having to go through a full day? Why do you do it?
Getting up at 5 AM and coming to school to run miles at a time (5 days a week, Monday - Friday), and go through an 8 hr day of school. Not to mention extracurricular activities outside of school is extremely exhausting and tiring. I do it through for the love of the sport and to get better every day
What’s your favorite part of cross country?
My favorite part about XC is the competitiveness and team bond that is created throughout the year.
Would you say cross country is more individual or team? Why?
Cross Country is definitely a team sport because you depend on 6 other guys to put their best efforts in and together y’all have the possibility to win the meet.
How do you prepare for upcoming meets?
As mentioned, we train 5 days a week at 5 AM to get in shape and prepare to run on Saturdays. Also, the night before I eat a carb loaded meal to get ready for the calories and carbs to be burnt the next day.
Name: Gracie Gilchriest
Grade: Sophomore
Best Time: 15:50 for 2 miles
Varsity/JV: Varsity

Why did you join cross country?
I joined Cross Country because I realized in Soccer season that I liked to run, and I wanted to improve my long distance speed so I will have a stronger stamina for Soccer and Ballet.
How long have you been in cross country?
This is my first year, but definitely not my last. :)
What are your hopes for this year? How have you improved since you started?
I hoped to get under 16 minutes at the District meet, but even though I didn’t, I was close with 16:06 for 2 miles. That’s a major improvement from my first meet, though… I had 17:46, which makes that almost a 2 minute improvement.
What have you learned from cross country (in the sport and life skills)?
Sport: Drink lots of water because running 4 miles consecutively without it sucks. Also, it’s helpful to develop a breathing pattern so you don’t die.
Life: After a certain point when you run, you begin to forget all of the stress in your life and you can literally just run away from it for a bit. No matter what, you can always have that escape because it’s a sport you can do throughout your entire life.
Think about the people you’ve met through cross country: coaches, students, fans. Who has influenced you the most? Why?
Coach Hatton has definitely influenced me because he is the kind of coach I like: he doesn’t scream at you 24/7. He’s always supportive and honest, and always looking to help you improve. As far as my teammates, Holden Cravy and Nick LaHaye have been very kind to me since I’ve joined Cross Country, and since the girls don’t have enough to make a full team, they have made me feel like I am a part of theirs.
Who’s your biggest supporter(s)?
Definitely Coach Hatton and all of the parents. They are always supportive, even when you suck. My parents are always supportive of me because they never actually thought I would ever join Cross Country, and they’re just proud that I’m actually doing it and enjoying it.
What’s the highest prize you’ve won (team, individual)?
My best time was at the Huffman Meet with my time of 15:50, but I placed about 53rd. My best placement was at the District Meet when I had 16:06 and placed 17th.
What’s it like getting up so early in the morning and then having to go through a full day? Why do you do it?
It sucks. A lot. At first, it’s hard to adapt to the extremely long days, but it makes you feel successful and productive when you realize what you did that day.
What’s your favorite part of cross country?
My favorite part about Cross Country is that it is as competitive as you want it to be. No matter whether you’re doing it to win or doing it for yourself, you can always improve.
What are some of your biggest strengths? Weaknesses?
Strengths: Stamina
Weaknesses: Speed
Would you say cross country is more individual or team? Why?
I’d say it’s a team sport because you’re with your other teammates every morning, and you’re always supportive of each other, through thick and thin.
How do you prepare for upcoming meets?
I attend practice, drink lots of water, and try to sleep well the night before.
