April Lorenz
Senior
Clarinet & Bass Clarinet
What is your name?
My name is April.
What is your grade?
I’m a Senior this year
What instrument(s) do you play?
I play clarinet and bass clarinet, although those are pretty much the same instrument. I’m planning to learn a brass instrument in the spring. (Possibly trumpet)
If you are a Fishie, how do you feel about making Sweepstakes and going to Area on your first year, even though that hasn’t happened for 6 years?

Seniors: how do you feel about making Sweepstakes and continuing to Area your last year?
I am ecstatic that we actually made it. I’ll be honest, the day of Regions, I had my doubts and I was kind of bummed because I knew Silsbee hadn’t made it to Area in a while. I didn’t want my Senior year to end with another 2 at Region. I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of this band this year. I’m so glad I get to spend my Senior year with these amazing people. (5.B)
Do you think your younger grades will make this a tradition in following years?
I truly hope that all the younger band members do carry this out and make it a tradition. I would love to hear every year that Silsbee High School made ones and that they are still keeping up with the awesomeness we have started.
How do you think the band will perform at Area?
As far as Area goes, I believe that as long as we perform and make it our best performance that we will do great. To me, personally, it’s not whether we make it past past the preliminary round and finals that make it a great performance. Just the fact that we get to go and perform and have fun doing so and make it our best makes it an awesome experience. No matter what 5 judges decide, we are still an awesome band. We have our downfalls as every band does, but we performed to the best of our ability and that’s all I can ask for my senior year.
What does making Area mean to you?
To me, Area means success. I know that other bands make it all the way to State, but those bands are larger. To me, the fact that we were able to make it and that we are such a small band compared to the other bands that I know made it to the Area round is amazing to me. We worked hard to make it this far and even harder to possibly go further. I feel like going to Area Saturday shows how much work every person has truly put into this and it shows that it does pay off.

If a Senior, how do you feel about making Sweepstakes and continuing to Area on your last year?
I am still overjoyed about it. It doesn’t seem real! It makes me so proud to be a part of this band. I always knew that we could do it. (5.B)
Do you think your younger grades will make this a tradition in following years?
Yes, I do! They are all so talented in their own ways, and if they work hard enough, they will be rewarded in the following years.
How do you think the band will perform at Area?
I think we are going to do amazing. These past two weeks are the hardest this band has ever worked, and we are determined to do our best at Area.
What does making Area mean to you?
It is such a huge honor and it means the world to me. Band is a big part of my life and I’m glad to finally get the opportunity to perform at Area for my senior year!

How do you think the band will perform at Area?
I think we will do great, honestly. We have worked so hard this year and we can’t let all that work go for nothing, but it will all depend on how much each individual wants to win to be the best we can be or to just plain have pride in ourselves and our band and get that Sweepstakes.
What does making Area mean to you?
Making Area to me, in my Junior year, really makes me happy. Like, all that work and time spent on being in band wasn’t for nothing. It really gives me a sense of pride to be able to have been with this band and been with the people that I’m with that we put our hearts into everything that we do. Area is more than a competition area. For marching band kids, it means you did something right and that you connected and worked with 80+ people to put a show together that might be forgotten by others but remembered by us. To me, making Area is like leaving my mark on this high school and/or to have a high school experience worth experiencing.

If you are a Fishie, how do you feel about making Sweepstakes and going to Area on your first year, even though that hasn’t happened for 6 years?
It feels amazing. Every second of the hot and exhausting band rehearsals we’ve had since July have been worth it.
Do you think your younger grades will make this a tradition in following years?
Absolutely. We know what we are capable of doing now, so we’ll strive for nothing but the best. :)
How do you think the band will perform at Area?
I think we’ve realized what a huge honor this is to be one of the top 23 bands going to Area, so when we get on that field at SFA and see the crowd and judges, we’ll truly give it our all and it’ll be our best performance yet.
What does making Area mean to you?
My gosh, it means the world. I’ve accomplished many things in my lifetime, but this has to be number one. Hearing them announce our name over the speaker with a one next to it, seeing everyone crying tears of joy and smiling, that has got to be one of the happiest days of my life. I felt so proud of myself and the band. We’ve worked so hard since day one! We really earned it. I still don’t think it’s really set in that we are going to Area. It’s incredible, really. Saturday is going to be amazing. I can’t wait to see how we do. Pride and Sweepstakes, wooohooo!

If you are a Fishie, how do you feel about making Sweepstakes and going to Area on your first year, even though that hasn’t happened for 6 years?
It is cool, but a lot of work.
Do you think your younger grades will make this a tradition in following years?
I don’t know that we will have the work ethic that we did this year, especially with the current 8th graders.
How do you think the band will perform at Area?
I feel like we won’t make Finals, but we won’t make last.
What does making Area mean to you?
It is cool, but a lot of work I didn’t necessarily want, so I guess it’s a bittersweet thing.
