Winning Poem:

Evie Short

What You Don't See

Brisk September Dawn

Bubbling baby boy

Parents filled with joy

They hold him as he screams

The tears begin to stream

Boy is off to school

Jumps onto the bus

Mother makes a fuss

He waves and says goodbye

Mother tries not to cry

Graduation Day

Teen years go by so fast

High school was a blast

Diploma in his hands

Mom crying in the stands

College is a blur

Always late to class

Meets a pretty lass

Across the room eyes meet

His heart skips a beat

First date jitters

His heart begins to soar

As he knocks upon the door

Like an angel from above

He wonders if it's love

A relationship to last

Three long years together

She hopes they'll last forever

Got through the fights they had

He goes to talk with her dad

A picnic by the bay

In the sun they bask

A question he must ask

On one knee so she will know

The tears begin to flow

A cold December dusk

A woman dressed in white

The most breathtaking sigh

How lucky he must feel

The tears being to spill

A call he can't deny

A teary, heart-broke goodbye

A decision made before

The boy is off to war

Freedom to protect

Conflict always found

Boots touching the ground

A country to defend

A Proud American

Destruction everywhere

Bodies on the ground

Casualties abound

A friend lost on the mission

The tears cloud his vision

A bomb goes off nearby

An injury sustained

A soldier who's ashamed

He feels empty and alone

Discharged, he's going home

Back to normal life

In bed with loving wife

How could he not do well?

His life a living Hell

A danger to his family

He wakes from sudden screams

Assaulted in his dreams

His wife begins to choke

His fingers on her throat

A family torn apart

A hidden injury

Illness you can't see

Is treatment working right?

A never-ending fight

Recovery in sight

Relationships restored

A baby is on board

Good news he loves to hear

The child arrives next year

Bubbling baby boy

Parents filled with joy

They hold his as he screams

The tears begin to steam

Honorable Mention:

Sarah Harper

Defending the Star Spangled Banner

Oh Say Can You See

The faces of many

Who have valiantly served

By The Dawn's Early Light

To the depths of the night

There are those that continue to work

What So Proudly We Hail

Hard-won freedom's tale

And those who suffered that grief

At The Twilight's Last Gleaming

With children still beaming

We forget that the fight is not brief

Whose Broad Stripes and Bright Stars

Remind us of scars

On hearts and on bodies the same

Through The Perilous Fight

To secure human rights

We've lost too many to name

O'er The Ramparts We Watch

Each citizen who has fought

And the citizens who are failing

What So Gallantly We Streaming

To remind us of dreaming

Towards forgiveness and freedom it's calling

And The Rockets Red Glare

Follows our prayers

As the ones we love still struggle

The Bombs Bursting In Air

Light to those who care

To keep America from trouble

Giving Proof Through The Night

That our soldiers still fight

Each day is a personal battle

Yet Our Flag Is Still There

Raised high in the air

And won't fall till the Great Judge's gavel

Oh, Say Does That Star Spangled Banner Yet Wave

O'er the Land Of The Free And The Home Of The Brave
